Donovan McNabb has called this game a must win, while Quntin Mikell referred to it as their “Super Bowl.” The absurdity of those statements aside, this is a game in which the Eagles need to do well if they’re hoping to make the playoffs. Additionally, They’ll be playing in front of a national audience in Chicago for Sunday Night Football.
After coming off two close losses to the Cowboys and Chargers, the Birds need to make a statement against a much weaker team whose QB has created a royal mess for himself, throwing 17 interceptions in just nine games this season. The Eagles have pulled down 15 picks so far, so it could be a lethal combination for Jay Cutler and the Bears.
Defensively, the Bears are lacking as well, especially with the loss of All Pro linebacker Brian Urlacher. Despite being 3-1 at home, this could be a tough game for them. Chicago is currently ranked 9th overall in total yards given up per game, but 19th in points allowed and 21st against the run. If Shady McCoy is looking for his breakout game, this it it.
Factor in Chicago’s propensity to play poorly at night, and it looks like an easy win for the Eagles.
But not so fast.
The Eagles have problems of their own. Brian Westbrook is out for at least week and probably the season, but despite that, the team needs to run the ball. The Bears weak defense should be vulnerable to this type of attack, and McNabb can’t always pass his way out of trouble, which is completely clear from watching the San Diego game.
Additionally, they’ve been terrible with third down conversions and maximizing points in the red zone. A field goal will not do – they need to score touchdowns and not relent. But most importantly, they need to play to their full potential and not play down to their opponents.
If the Eagles have any playoff aspirations, they need to come into this game and make some noise. They’re historically strong finishers, so now is the time for them to turn it on.
