DeSean Jackson Wants a New Contract

January 29, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Not to be a cynic, but there’s only one reason why a player signs with Drew Rosenhaus – to get as much money as possible. I am not faulting anyone in the NFL for doing this, because if I were in the same position, I’d try to make the most out of my opportunity.

When DeSean signed with Rosenhaus last year, we all knew what was up despite what anyone said to the media. Number 10 knew he was good and worth the money, and he was going to do his best to get it. So it was no surprise this week when he hinted at wanting a new contract.

DeSean Jackson Named NFC Special Teams Player of the Month

January 8, 2010 · Leave a Comment

The Eagles’ playmaking wide receiver has been named the NFC Special Teams player of the month, the second time this season he has received this award. He won it in September, and this is his fifth overall award.

He led the league with a 15.2-yard punt return average, which is also the fourth-highest average for a single season in team history. His two punt returns for touchdowns tied Brian Westbrook for the most all time in Eagles history for a single-season.

Additionally, he was elected to the Pro Bowl as both wide receiver and kick returner. He’s the first player ever to be elected at two positions, although the Minnesota Vikings’ Percy Harvin will now be returning kicks at the game.

DeSean Jackson Named Special Teams Player of the Week

December 16, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Back from a one week absence due to a concussion, DeSean Jackson again showed why he’s one of the league’s most explosive players. He pulled down several catches and scored two touchdowns, including one from a 72-yard punt return.

Because of this play, Jackson was named the NFC special teams player of the week, the second time this season he’s earned that. The first came after the season opener against Carolina. Additionally, he was special teams player of the month for September and the NFC offensive player of the week after scoring on a 57-yard pass and a 67-yard run during an Oct. 26 win at Washington.

Do we need any more reasons to be impressed by him? His punt return against the Giants was nothing short of brilliant as Jackson ran circles around defenders, back-pedaled, and then took off towards to the endzone. There was never any doubt it. He made have a traditionally small frame for a receiver, but some people are just extraordinary talents.

Week 14 Preview: Eagles at Giants

December 11, 2009 · Leave a Comment

As football fans, weeks like these are the ones we live for. The Eagles are currently tied at the top of the NFC East with the hated Cowboys, and this Sunday night is a prime time match-up in the Meadowlands against the Giants. The G-Men are one game out of the division lead.

While the Eagles destroyed the Giants 40-17 in a week 8 match-up in Philly, if history is any judge, that result will likely not play into either team’s performance this week. This is a game that needs to be considered on its own. These are two tough teams that are fighting to make the playoffs, and despite their troubles this year, this will likely be a fight to the end.

DeSean Jackson to Play on Sunday

December 8, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Wide receiver DeSean Jackson said yesterday on his radio show on 97.5 The Fanatic that he’ll play this Sunday when the Eagles face the Giants in New Jersey. According to what he said on his radio show, he did lose consciousness briefly during the Redskins game, and due to the league’s new precautions, Jackson sat out this past week.

We’re excited to see the emerging star back in the lineup. While the Birds have a whole host of offensive threats, the league has come to acknowledge Jackson as a play-making star receiver.  The team will need all of the weapons they can get this week.

DeSean Jackson, Akeem Jordan out this Sunday

December 4, 2009 · Leave a Comment

As mentioned in my preview of this Sunday’s game against the Falcons, wide receiver DeSean Jackson was likely to sit this weekend. It’s apparent the team is being very careful since his minor concussion at home against the Redskins last weekend.

According to the Eagles’ official site, coach Andy Reid said Jackson is experiencing “normal headaches.”

Also out are linebacker Akeem Jordan, who was questionable this week, wide receiver Kevin Curtis, and running back Brian Westbrook. Jordan still has not recovered from a hyper-extended knee that has kept his out of the last two games.

Week 13 Preview: Eagles at Falcons

December 4, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Coming into this week’s match-up in Atlanta, the Eagles currently hold a lead for the wild card, but the team’s play still remains sloppy.  They were solid favorites to beat the Redskins, and while a win is a win, they came back from eight points down in the 4th quarter to pull out a 3-point win.

If the Birds want to make noise in the playoffs, they need to handily put away teams that are inferior to them with as few mistakes as possible.  No team’s perfect, and NFC East opponents are always bound to play tough, but the Eagles took almost the entire game to show that they were in control.

Week 12 Preview: Redskins at Eagles

November 28, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I just returned from Vegas tonight, so apologies about the late preview of this Sunday’s match-up.

With the Eagles sitting near the top of the NFC East and in the hunt for a playoff spot, this is a game that they need to put in the win column. The Redskins may be in last place and postponing their postseason aspirations until next year, but they typically play their division rivals tough.

Last Sunday the Birds took down the Bears 24-20 on the road, which was a much-needed late game victory. That immediacy needs to carry into this week, especially with the Giants already take a loss against the Broncos on Thursday.

Week 11: An Ugly Win in Chicago

November 23, 2009 · 2 Comments

This wasn’t the win I was looking for from the Eagles. I wanted them to blaze into Chicago with everything clicking and take a convincing game from a conference opponent. Although the Birds won 24-20, it was an ugly affair with three turnovers and some dumb penalties.

The worst performance of the game came from Jay Cutler, easily the worst QB the Eagles have faced all season. There are very few good things that can be said about his game. There were a number of times where he had guys open, but his passes missed them by 5 yards, sometimes even more. The Bears can’t be too happy about this.

As for the Birds, there were a few bright spots on both sides of the ball. Most importantly though, they won on the road and came from behind to win a close game.

Week 9 Preview: Eagles vs. Cowboys

November 6, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Since I was a kid, one of my favorite games of each season has been when the Cowboys came to Philly.  Dallas has always been so easy to hate, and even when we were terrible, it’s always great to see the hometown fans give the visitors a hard time.  They may be “America’s Team,” but I still think they suck.

A lot has been made this week by the national media about the Cowboys’ recent “surge” and how Tony Romo and Miles Austin are “clicking,” but as is often the case, the national media has glazed over the important details.  The Cowboys are riding high on a three game winning streak which saw them beat the Chiefs (in overtime), Falcons, and Seahawks, but taking a look at their defensive rankings, you’ll see that they come in at 30, 29, and 14.

The Eagles, who are currently ranked #10 defensively, just dismantled the Giants (#3), and should have no problem against Jerry’s Boys, who come in at #22.  While both teams are ranked at 5-2, most of their wins have been against below average teams, with the Cowboys defeats coming against sides that are a combined 6-22.  But the Eagles even got beat by the Raiders, which is more than likely their annual “mail it in” affair.

This is a definite win for the Birds, but it won’t be a cakewalk.  DeSean Jackson will likely give the Cowboys a hard time as he is quickly becoming one of the league’s top playmakers, recently being called “the most dangerous player in the NFL right now” by ESPN’s Matt Mosley.  This guy should run circles around Dallas’s low-ranked defense.

Also, keep an eye on Asante Samuel, who does one thing and does it quite well – intercept errant passes.  Tony Romo hasn’t thrown a pick in three weeks, so the guy’s due – not that he’s really been challenged.  Asante has been golden this year and should do a good job knocking Romo down a few levels.

The Eagles need to watch out for Dallas on the run, as they’re currently ranked sixth in average yards per game this season.  This has been a problem for the Birds this season, and Marion Barber and Felix Jones are smart rushers who need to be locked down early and often.  If the Eagles defend like they did last week, expect these two to be relatively quiet, which will undoubtedly force Romo to throw the ball.

The last thing to consider is the Cowboys’ last visit to the Linc.  They were blown out 44-6 in what was essentially a playoff game – the winner of the game got the last Wildcard spot. I am sure this loss is still on the mind of the team and there are two ways to look at it – it can weigh them down or be used as a motivating force.  It will be interesting to see how they respond, but either way, expect the Eagles to win.
