Marlin Jackson an Eagle?

March 10, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Let’s face it: I don’t think many fans have been too happy with the Eagles’ moves since free agency began. Sure, the team laid down big extensions for fan favorites and top performers Leonard Weaver and Jason Avant, but the holes the team has, of which there are many, have yet to be filled.

One answer could come today when free agent safety Marlin Jackson visit the NovaCare complex at 3pm, after his scheduled 11am talk with reporters. Jackson, who shares an agent with Avant, will be visiting the Ravens beforehand.

Goodbye Reggie Brown, Avant extended

March 8, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Face it, Reggie Brown was terrible. The team should have gotten rid of their second round from 2005 a few years ago, but finally today he was sent to Tampa Bay for an undisclosed 2011 draft pick. This past season he caught 9 passes for 155 yards, including a memorable TD pass from Michael Vick.

Happy trails, Reggie. Let’s hope Kevin Curtis follows you.

Staying with the receivers for a moment, the team also locked up Jason Avant for five years. The restricted free agent had a bit of a breakout year last season, proving to be dependable for the team, especially in third down situations. According to ESPN, the deal is worth $18 million, $8 million guaranteed.

Brian Westbrook Era is Over

February 23, 2010 · Leave a Comment

If you’ve been living under a rock, perhaps you missed this, but Brian Westbrook was officially released by the team today. A fan favorite since he was drafted by the team in 2002, he rose through the ranks to become one of the greatest ever to wear green and white.

Contributing factors to his release include the $7.25 million he would have been owed if brought back, as well as his increasing injuries, and the emergence of LeSean McCoy.

So where does he end up next? Washington to play with this brother?

Read about some of his career highlights over at Phinally Philly – it’s a piece that I posted earlier today.

No Contract Talks With Kolb

February 17, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Despite all of the options at quarterback for the Eagles, there are still a lot of question marks as to who will be under center next season. The most likely candidate will be McNabb, and frankly, it will be shocking if it’s not him.

Back-up and heir apparent Kevin Kolb has one more year left on his contract, and according to the Inquirer, there have been no talks of an extension, despite the rumors last week to the contrary. McNabb and Vick also have a year left on their contracts – Reid has gone on the record saying that #5 would be back.

Westbrook Sure He Will Not Retire

February 14, 2010 · Leave a Comment

According to Philly.com’s Moving the Chains blog, Brian Westbrook is not ready to retire.

“I’m a hundred percent sure that I wouldn’t hang it up before [starting offseason training] unless something crazy happens,” Westbrook told Dan Rather of HDNet’s Dan Rather Reports.

As last season began, it looked like Westbrook was ready to play and over many of the injuries that had plagued him. It was not to be, as he played in a career-low eight games, rushing for 274 yards, and hauling in 25 receptions en route to two touchdowns on the season. He also suffered two concussions, in games against the Redskins (week 7) and Chargers (week 10).

Tom Brookshier dies last night at 78

January 30, 2010 · Leave a Comment

In an announcement from the team today, former defensive back Tom Brookshier died Friday night at the age of 78. He joined the Eagles in 1953 after being drafted out of Colorado, spending 7 seasons in Philly including the Birds’ last championship team. He earned All-Pro honors twice.  Tom was also a former CBS announcer.

In a statement today from Andy Reid:

“Tom Brookshier is one of all-time greats, both for what he did on the field and for the kind of man he was off the field. I will always remember him for his booming and bright personality. He had an uncanny love for life, a love for his family and a love for the game of football, especially for the Philadelphia Eagles. He bled green and I will always cherish our conversations and the relationship that we fostered throughout my tenure in Philadelphia. Our deepest condolences go out to his wife, Barbara, and the rest of the Brookshier family.”

DeSean Jackson Wants a New Contract

January 29, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Not to be a cynic, but there’s only one reason why a player signs with Drew Rosenhaus – to get as much money as possible. I am not faulting anyone in the NFL for doing this, because if I were in the same position, I’d try to make the most out of my opportunity.

When DeSean signed with Rosenhaus last year, we all knew what was up despite what anyone said to the media. Number 10 knew he was good and worth the money, and he was going to do his best to get it. So it was no surprise this week when he hinted at wanting a new contract.

Eagles Sign CFL Rookie of the Year

January 20, 2010 · Leave a Comment

As I travel more, I’ve started to follow sports that I’ve previously ignored, like cricket and the Canadian Football League. While I am by no means an expert, I do catch a CFL game here and there and I even watched the most recent Grey Cup. It was a fun game to watch, and while some of the rules are still foreign to me, I am going to pick up where I left off next season.

In years past many players have made a successful jump from the CFL to NFL, and here’s the hoping that the Eagles’ latest signing can be among them. Martell Mallett, who was named the Most Outstanding Rookie in the Canadian Football League this past season, starred for the BC Lions.

Eagles Free Agents

January 14, 2010 · 1 Comment

Looking at the 2010 season, the Eagles obviously have a lot of holes to fill. On the other side, there are a number of players that have expiring contracts, some of which are important members of the team.

There are several guys that will be eligible for unrestricted free agency, although unless a new collective bargaining agreement is finished soon players with less than six years of service will only be restricted free agents. Names on this list include Jason Avant (WR), Jason Babin (DE), Nick Cole (G/C), Omar Gaither (LB), Chris Gocong (LB), Ellis Hobbs (CB), Max Jean-Gilles (G), Sean Jones (S), Akeem Jordan (LB), Sav Rocca (P), Alex Smith (TE), Jeremiah Trotter (LB), Leonard Weaver (FB), and Tracy White (LB).
