Marlin Jackson an Eagle?

March 10, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Let’s face it: I don’t think many fans have been too happy with the Eagles’ moves since free agency began. Sure, the team laid down big extensions for fan favorites and top performers Leonard Weaver and Jason Avant, but the holes the team has, of which there are many, have yet to be filled.

One answer could come today when free agent safety Marlin Jackson visit the NovaCare complex at 3pm, after his scheduled 11am talk with reporters. Jackson, who shares an agent with Avant, will be visiting the Ravens beforehand.

Eagles Free Agents

January 14, 2010 · 1 Comment

Looking at the 2010 season, the Eagles obviously have a lot of holes to fill. On the other side, there are a number of players that have expiring contracts, some of which are important members of the team.

There are several guys that will be eligible for unrestricted free agency, although unless a new collective bargaining agreement is finished soon players with less than six years of service will only be restricted free agents. Names on this list include Jason Avant (WR), Jason Babin (DE), Nick Cole (G/C), Omar Gaither (LB), Chris Gocong (LB), Ellis Hobbs (CB), Max Jean-Gilles (G), Sean Jones (S), Akeem Jordan (LB), Sav Rocca (P), Alex Smith (TE), Jeremiah Trotter (LB), Leonard Weaver (FB), and Tracy White (LB).

Week 14: Eagles Now in Driver’s Seat

December 14, 2009 · Leave a Comment

With last night’s win in the Meadowlands, the Eagles are now in sole possession of first place and have a very good shot at finishing up the season as the division winner. Finishing 12-4 is not out of the question either as their remaining games are against the 49ers, Broncos, and the still tough, but reeling Cowboys.

Additionally, a scenario is developing where the Cowboys do not make the playoffs. This weekend they face the Saints in New Orleans, a game that they are almost certain to lose.

While last night’s game was a convincing win for the Birds, there was a lot of sloppy play. From Trent Cole’s stupid thrown punch as time expired in the fourth quarter to the defense’s lack of tackling, the Eagles did not play a perfect game. We all know they can control the ball on defense – we saw that in Atlanta – but if they hope to be an elite team that plays deep into January, they need to take players down and bring out their opponent’s punters with regularity.

Week 13: Blowout in Atlanta

December 6, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Today the Eagles took their two game winning streak to Atlanta to face a banged-up Falcons team that was undefeated at home, coming away with a 34-7 thrashing behind standout performances from Michael Vick, Donovan McNabb, Leonard Weaver, and Sheldon Brown. Pepper in some brilliant hits from Asante Samuel and diverse play-calling, and you have an amazing performance from a team that now sits in a first place tie with the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East.

Week 10 Preview: Eagles at Chargers

November 13, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Last Sunday, the Eagles were handed a very disappointing loss by the Cowboys.  It’s a contest that they could have won, but the team was lackadaisical and played some very uninspiring football.

This Sunday the Birds head to San Diego to play a team that shares their record (5-3), yet is on a roll.  The Eagles, on the other hand, have been largely inconsistent this year, blowing out good and bad teams, but also struggling against evenly matched and terrible teams.  It’s been a decent season, but if they Eagles played to their potential, their record would currently be 7-1.

San Diego hasn’t been kind to them over the years, as they’ve lost their last four games there.  The last meeting between the two teams was in Philly in 2005, which the Eagles won 20-17.

A big key for the game will be if the Andy Reid gets over his reluctance to run the ball.  Westbrook practiced yesterday and should be back on Sunday.  With him, LeSean McCoy, and Leonard Weaver, the Eagles need to exploit their running game – the Chargers are ranked 26th in the league against the run, allowing 130.1 yards per game. With the Chargers playing tough against the pass, the Eagles need to run the ball to get the win.

There’s another telling stat that has been bandied about lately – the Eagles are 1-8-1 in their last 10 games decided by seven points or less.  This team has shown an ability to be bullies, beating up on teams hard when they’re ahead, but if things are tight, they just shut down.  This is a trend that needs to stop, and as evidenced by the Chargers win against the Giants, the other side definitely knows how to pull out the victory when things are tight.

Lastly, the Eagles are having a tough time at LB with Stewart Bradley and Omar Gaither out for the season, and Akeem Jordan sitting this week.  Expect to see Chris Gocong at middle linebacker, Moises Fokou at the strong side backer position, and Will Witherspoon at WIL.

This game won’t be an easy one, but let’s hope the Birds pull it out, especially since I’ll be there to see this one in person. Expect some pictures from tailgating and the game.

Week 9: The Eagles Cause Themselves to Lose…Again

November 10, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Yesterday on 97.5 The Fanatic while analyzing Sunday night’s Birds loss to the Cowboys, the hosts got into some of the defining problems of the Andy Reid/Donovan McNabb-era.  If they had to assign an epitaph to the past ten years, it would be a team that has been very good, but not good enough.

I couldn’t agree more.  Some legitimate stars and hall-of-famers have donned green, but the team has never been able to get over that hump.  This past weekend’s game summed up this perfectly – misuse of challenges, Reid’s clock mismanagement, penalties, and miscommunication between McNabb and his receiving corps.  Plus, there’s also the Michael Vick experiment, which is a complete failure at the point.  Running a few trick plays each game isn’t going to help the team win – they need to focus on fundamentals, and most importantly, they need to run the ball a lot more.  While Westbrook may be out, they have Leonard Weaver and LeSean McCoy.  Both players have shown promise, and while the latter needs time to develop, they have the potential to be serious threats on the field.

The Cowboys may have played a good ball game, but the Eagles were in it to the very end with a serious chance to win.  Having a timeout in the waning moments of the 4th quarter would have been key, especially if the team wants to be competitive in close games.  Reid can masterfully guide the team to some serious beatings on the opponent, but I’d like to see him do the same in tight contests.

The Birds are in San Diego this weekend, and I’ll likely be making the drive with some other displaced Philadelphians.
