If you’ve been living under a rock, perhaps you missed this, but Brian Westbrook was officially released by the team today. A fan favorite since he was drafted by the team in 2002, he rose through the ranks to become one of the greatest ever to wear green and white.
Contributing factors to his release include the $7.25 million he would have been owed if brought back, as well as his increasing injuries, and the emergence of LeSean McCoy.
So where does he end up next? Washington to play with this brother?
Read about some of his career highlights over at Phinally Philly – it’s a piece that I posted earlier today.

Multiple storylines are surfacing for this week’s game against the Broncos, which is the last home game of the season. The most obvious one is the return of fan favorite Brian Dawkins, returning to Philly for the first time since signing as a free agent with Denver in the off-season.
Next we have the Eagles’ playoff picture, which is still developing. Last week’s win against the 49ers guaranteed them a trip to the post-season, but there’s no reason for them to stop now. A win this week, coupled with a Cowboys loss, guarantees the NFC East crowd. Looming in the distance, albeit far-off, is the second and final first round bye. The Eagles need to win their last two games and the Vikings need to lose theirs.

Coming into this week’s match-up in Atlanta, the Eagles currently hold a lead for the wild card, but the team’s play still remains sloppy. They were solid favorites to beat the Redskins, and while a win is a win, they came back from eight points down in the 4th quarter to pull out a 3-point win.
If the Birds want to make noise in the playoffs, they need to handily put away teams that are inferior to them with as few mistakes as possible. No team’s perfect, and NFC East opponents are always bound to play tough, but the Eagles took almost the entire game to show that they were in control.

New trends in the past few weeks with the Eagles include pulling out wins in the fourth quarter and an increased focus on the running game. Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? While the Birds didn’t get the win in the easiest way, they still took down a divisional opponent that historically plays them very tough.
With today’s 27-24 win over the Redskins, the Eagles sit at 7-4 on the season and are just one game behind the Cowboys.
Before talking about the positives, I want to look at the negatives since there are a few things the team needs to work on. Penalties still remain a huge problem, especially with special teams. I don’t know what else can be said about this, but one day those penalties are going to keep the team from getting a win.

I just returned from Vegas tonight, so apologies about the late preview of this Sunday’s match-up.
With the Eagles sitting near the top of the NFC East and in the hunt for a playoff spot, this is a game that they need to put in the win column. The Redskins may be in last place and postponing their postseason aspirations until next year, but they typically play their division rivals tough.
Last Sunday the Birds took down the Bears 24-20 on the road, which was a much-needed late game victory. That immediacy needs to carry into this week, especially with the Giants already take a loss against the Broncos on Thursday.

This wasn’t the win I was looking for from the Eagles. I wanted them to blaze into Chicago with everything clicking and take a convincing game from a conference opponent. Although the Birds won 24-20, it was an ugly affair with three turnovers and some dumb penalties.
The worst performance of the game came from Jay Cutler, easily the worst QB the Eagles have faced all season. There are very few good things that can be said about his game. There were a number of times where he had guys open, but his passes missed them by 5 yards, sometimes even more. The Bears can’t be too happy about this.
As for the Birds, there were a few bright spots on both sides of the ball. Most importantly though, they won on the road and came from behind to win a close game.

Donovan McNabb has called this game a must win, while Quntin Mikell referred to it as their “Super Bowl.” The absurdity of those statements aside, this is a game in which the Eagles need to do well if they’re hoping to make the playoffs. Additionally, They’ll be playing in front of a national audience in Chicago for Sunday Night Football.

Last Sunday, the Eagles were handed a very disappointing loss by the Cowboys. It’s a contest that they could have won, but the team was lackadaisical and played some very uninspiring football.
This Sunday the Birds head to San Diego to play a team that shares their record (5-3), yet is on a roll. The Eagles, on the other hand, have been largely inconsistent this year, blowing out good and bad teams, but also struggling against evenly matched and terrible teams. It’s been a decent season, but if they Eagles played to their potential, their record would currently be 7-1.
San Diego hasn’t been kind to them over the years, as they’ve lost their last four games there. The last meeting between the two teams was in Philly in 2005, which the Eagles won 20-17.
A big key for the game will be if the Andy Reid gets over his reluctance to run the ball. Westbrook practiced yesterday and should be back on Sunday. With him, LeSean McCoy, and Leonard Weaver, the Eagles need to exploit their running game – the Chargers are ranked 26th in the league against the run, allowing 130.1 yards per game. With the Chargers playing tough against the pass, the Eagles need to run the ball to get the win.
There’s another telling stat that has been bandied about lately – the Eagles are 1-8-1 in their last 10 games decided by seven points or less. This team has shown an ability to be bullies, beating up on teams hard when they’re ahead, but if things are tight, they just shut down. This is a trend that needs to stop, and as evidenced by the Chargers win against the Giants, the other side definitely knows how to pull out the victory when things are tight.
Lastly, the Eagles are having a tough time at LB with Stewart Bradley and Omar Gaither out for the season, and Akeem Jordan sitting this week. Expect to see Chris Gocong at middle linebacker, Moises Fokou at the strong side backer position, and Will Witherspoon at WIL.
This game won’t be an easy one, but let’s hope the Birds pull it out, especially since I’ll be there to see this one in person. Expect some pictures from tailgating and the game.
